Instrumentation

The German name for "Church Brass" is "Posaunenchor" which literally translates to "Trombone Choir". Now, Trombone Choir raises the expectation that you would only find trombones played by the members. However, this may be true only for some, if it all. The instumtation rather follows a vocal choir having 4 voices being Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Base. Soprano and Alto are played by trumpets and flügel-horns. For the "male" voices, trombones, horns and tenor horns are in use. Additionally, there is the tube for the 16" voice.
Originally, the church brass of Holzhausen/Porta had 2 trumpets, 4 flügel horns, 1 tenor horn, 2 trombones and 1 tube. The initiative to found a church brass came from members of the YMCA, so it comes as no surprise that at the time there were no women among the players. Fortunately, this has chnaged meanwhile.
Until the late 1970th, the Kuhlo-flügel horn was the most popular instrument. But then trompets became fancy. A flügel horn was last played in Holzhausen more than 35 years ago. It's kind of pity, as the warmth of a flügel makes several pieces of music more appealing. Also, there is a vacancy on the tuba position.
Currently, the church brass of Holzhausen hosts 7 trumpets, 3 trombones and 1 tenor horn. The players are aged between 16 and 77.
